How is PKD treated?
There is no cure for PKD
Currently for people with PKD the treatment is to manage the symptoms. There is currently no reliable way to treat or cure the disease itself. Typically the disease progresses and PKD patients will eventually need dialysis or a kidney transplant.PKD symptoms are managed with:
- A low salt diet
- Pain medication
- Antibiotics (for treatment or kidney or urinary tract infections)
- Surgery (if necessary to drain cysts)
- Diuretics (medicine that helps the body remove fluid)
- Blood pressure medication
Long term treatment of PKD involves transplant or dialysis. Dialysis can be done in one of two ways: peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. Peritoneal dialysis can often be done at home and involves running a hypertonic solution into and out of the abdominal cavity to help the body get rid of excess fluid. Hemodialysis is done in a hospital or clinic and involves cleaning the blood with a special machine.

Untested Treatments for PKD
Unfortunately because there is no cure or treatment for PKD there is a lot of false information available. This information is readily accessible in multiple places on the internet. Patients awaiting transplant may seek alternate treatment when it seems that they are out of options. Study have not shown any benefits from these alternative treatments and patients with PKD should ALWAYS talk to their health care provider before attempting alternative medicine. While some of these treatments may be harmless, it is possible that untested treatments could also be damaging to your health.
